The Mint Julep is a great all-rounder and essential tradition on Kentucky Derby day. The sugar brings together the warmth of the bourbon and the cool of the mint perfectly results in a surprisingly complex cocktail for just three ingredients.
- 4 to 5 sprigs of mint
- 1 tbsp Simple syrup or 2 sugar cubes
- 70ml Bourbon (go with one with lots of caramel or vanilla)
- Mint leaves – To garnish
Pack a Julep cup or Collins glass with crushed ice over some gently crushed mint and sugar. Pour over the bourbon and then replace lost ice. Garnish with mint and enjoy!!
If you’re using syrup, try crushed mint, ice, burbon then syrup and more mint.
